"Blades of Death" - 2nd Co; 1st Bn, 5th SoL Circa 3028

During the 4th Succession War Takashi Kurita wanted to strike into the Federated Suns and seize a key star system in support of there Kapteyn Accord allies.  One of the key objectives for this effort was Northwind defended by the 5th Deneb Light Cavalry, as well as the mercenary Team Banzai and the Kell Hound associated battalion Bradley's Bravos.  Takashi dispatched General Conti of the 5th Sword of Light; the 36th Dieron Regulars and the newly formed Genyosha.

The battle quickly degenerated into a slugfest, one that the DCMS was going to lose good men and material and a lot of time to win.  Rather than fight the Fedrats on an open field General Conti used a raid on a water reservoir to poison many of the Deneb Cavalry units and nearly turn the entire thing into a route.  Just as the Kuritans were about to achieve victory the arrival of all four regiments of the Northwind Highlanders ended that ambition.  Lured by the offer of there home world of Northwind under there control once again the mercenaries flipped sides and joined the employ of the Federated Suns; forcing the Kuritan forces to withdraw.

The 5th Sword of Light took on the Highlanders as they landed; which is detailed in the Fourth Succession Wars scenario book (old volume).  This company detailed here of the 5th Sword of Light is taken from that scenario - the Kuritans are represented here as running 3 Grasshoppers in one company.  For someone like myself who does not love a grasshopper that seems excessive.  I did take a little bit of liberty in making one of them an upgraded variant; the 5J; which uses tech not available in the 3028 time period except by extreme exception.  I frankly only had another grasshopper of this make so rather than go without I compromised.

As I was planning this project I went ahead and pushed up the timeline to complete the full 5th Sword of Light battalion - next up will be the 2nd Sword of Light from the Kell Hounds book (mostly).

The original entry in the world of Batteltech for the now famous Kell Hounds was the death of Ian Davion on Mallory's World.  Here the 2nd Sword of Light caught the Davion first prince and killed him as he covered a withdrawal of his Guards off world.  With the Prince down one the field the Kell Hounds rushed the 2nd Sworders to secure the body and prevent it being carried off to the Combine as a trophy.  The original Kell Hounds scenario book has one such meeting between Zakahashi's Zombies (see previous project post) and the 1st Co. of the Kell Hounds 2nd Battalion which I have recreated here. The Kell Hounds are one of the most Iconic of units in the Battletech universe, taking a central role as a way of telling the story of the 4th Succession Wars as well as acting as a kind of window into the Clans via Phelan Kell's capture by Clan Wolf in the Clan Invasion.  Always portrayed as tactical genius and elite; the Kell Hounds have always been donned in expansive plot...

Kurita Command Lance - 2nd Sword of Light; Circa 4th Succession War

  This lance is taken directly from the 4th Succession War Atlas sourcebook.  In the listings there the 1st Battalions command lance is listed as "H4".  When we reference this in the atlas tables for the standard Kurita lance of this type we see it is made up of a Dragon, Warhammer, Rifleman and Grasshopper.  In true fashion then I have added this exact lance to my 2nd Sword of Light Battalion to maintain its lore compliance - and these are as always classic succession wars mechs with beautiful lines to paint... even if I do think the Grasshopper is a bit to common place in the DCMS for its 'rarity' it has in the lore.

Hsien Hotheads - Karnov UR Transports

How every Karnov pilot feels flying back to base  after a successful beer run. I have always loved the odd ball units in Battletech, especially when it comes to campaign operations.  And VTOL units definitely fit that mark.  They are deathly fragile when exposed to direct fire, and doubly so once the LBX autocannons were introduced, but when you know how to handle them they can be loads of fun.  And for that reason I am kicking off what I am calling my VTOL project with a pair of the classic VTOL transport - the Karnov UR Titlrotor. If you read thru the old school tech readouts you will find accounts of that particular unit in combat operations, and in the original 3026 readout they recount the use of Karnov UR transports by the Hsien Hotheads to do some fast recovery on mechs and there pilots. In 3012 Hsien Hotheads were on a raid into Marik space which quickly began to go south.  With a mech company crippled by mines and in need of a hasty retreat the hotheads...
